Sumner 2, Curtis 1
(University Place, WA) Curtis came into the match unbeaten on the season and 7-0-5 after getting 1-1 draws against Olympia and Rogers. Sumner has scored at least 4 goals in 5 straight matches and only given up on goal in that same span. Last season these teams played once with Sumner winning 2-1.
1st Half
The Sumner Spartans got the goal scoring going very early. A minute and a half in, Sumner pressed a defender at the top of Curtis’ penalty area. Chloe Zehnder won the ball and found Henley Nelson whose low shot put Sumner up 1-0.
The rest of the first half was a back and forth battle with neither team able to find the back of the net. With 13 combined ( 7 for Sumner and 6 for Curtis) first half goal kicks it wasn’t for a lack of trying.
Curtis keeper Nora Bell made one save in the firs half while Sumner goalie Devon Bankers racked up 3 saves. Sumner also took 2 corner kicks in the first half.
Halftime Sumner 1 Curtis 0
Sumner struck again in the second half off a throw-in to Chloe Zehnder the freshman settled the ball, made 2 moves and fired in the shot.
Curtis answered back 5 minutes later on a break away goal by Isla Dravis. Dravis poked away a pass then turned on the jets and got a one on one with the Sumner keeper. The low opposite post shot was good and Curtis trailed 2-1 at that point.
Again the action stayed high tempo but the final score was the same as the last time they played Sumner winning 2-1.
Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP of the Game
The MVP of the match went to Sumner’s Henley Nelson who scored the first goal and whose play in the midfield set the tone throughout the match.
