WF West 3, Black Hills 2
(Chehalis, WA) Five games into Evergreen 2A play and the Black Hills Wolves and WF West Bearcats found themselves at the top of the standings as they were set to start the second leg of league play on Tuesday night. Black Hills entered the rematch with WF West on a four-match winning streak, outscoring opponents 14-1 during that stretch. WF West started league play hot with two strong wins over Black Hills and Tumwater but narrowly beat Shelton and Aberdeen while playing to a draw with Centralia.
With the league going to the standard scoring system in soccer of three points for a win, one for a draw, and none for a loss with no overtime or shootouts, the Bearcats entered Tuesday with 13 points, one ahead of Black Hills’ 12. A win for the Wolves would move them to the top of the standings while the Bearcats would look to replicate their 2-1 win over the Wolves to open league play and try to widen their lead in the EvCo 2A.
1st Half
It was Black Hills using their speed early on to control possession and earn a couple of early looks as Ella McNair and Ciara Nichols led the early attack for the Wolves. WF West keeper Charlee Nelson prevented anything from getting in the back of the net for WF West. The Bearcats would have a couple of early runs as well but couldn’t get anything past Jade Bender either. Sable Bunker was an important piece for WF West in the transition from defense to offense. The Bearcats would finally get a breakaway as Izzy Teeter went one-on-one with a Black Hills defender. Teeter got the ball to her left foot and fired a strike into the back of the net to give WF West the 1-0 lead in the 13th minute.
Black Hills defense was very smart with Sienna Perry, Brooklyn Miner, Ariana Berrow, and Marlie Voorhies all communicating well. The backline would step up together and caught WF West offsides multiple times in the first half which not only shutdown the Bearcat runs, but also allowed the Wolves to get on the front foot in attack. The best weapon for Black Hills were the throw ins from Natalie Jarmin which were in essence corner kicks. Jarmin had a number of them but in the 24th minute she put one right on frame that was tapped in by Hailey Moxham to tie the match at 1-1, where it would remain into halftime.
2nd Half
WF West continued to get caught offsides in the early portion of the second half but finally made an adjustment. The Bearcats started their runs on their own half of the field, where they couldn’t be offsides. The defense of Addy Arthurs and Tinsley Brown started to send the long passes from out wide while the middle of the defense stayed compact as Kenley Fragner and Elise Caserta slowed down the Black Hills attack. Freshman forward Mirabel Burger would weave through traffic and took a shot that spilled off of Jade Bender. Fortunately for the Bearcats, Izzy Teeter was right there to clean it up and put her second goal in the back of the net to make it 2-1 WF West in the 56th minute.
The Bearcats weren’t done yet as they looked to build on that momentum and they did as the attack dominated the next chunk of the game. The Bearcats pressured the Black Hills defense and smothered the ball in their attacking third. However, they got a little inaccurate on their shots as they couldn’t test Bender to try to extend the lead. That changed in the 62nd minute when Jana Anderson sent a long ball that was won by Burger and put on her right foot. Burger sent a shot that just kissed the post and deflected in. WF West’s attack had their groove back as they took a 3-1 lead.
Things could have just spiraled after that final goal for Black Hills but the Wolves continued to fight to try to get back into the match. They had some trouble dealing with the physicality of WF West which neutralized the Wolves speed advantage. There were moments where WF West was too aggressive and one of those moments brought Black Hills to life. A quick free kick taken by Sienna Perry was picture perfect, as was the header by Ella McNair to cut the deficit to 3-2 in the 67th minute. That was as close as Black Hills could get however as WF West was able to clear the remaining attacks from Black Hills to win the match 3-2 and remain atop the Evergreen 2A Conference.
Chehalis Holiday Inn Express MVP of the Game
Our Chehalis Holiday Inn Express MVP of the Game went to junior Izzy Teeter for WF West. Teeter scored two goals, both with hustle and drive as she powered past a defender to score the first goal of the match and then followed the shot of a teammate to clean up a spill out to give WF West a 2-1 lead in the second half. Teeter’s hustle had her in the right spot a number of times and won the Bearcats multiple possessions and opportunities.
