(Tumwater, WA) A second threat of violence at another SW Washington football game has led to the cancellation of that game. The annual Pioneer Bowl between district rivals Black Hills and Tumwater was canceled about an hour before the expected kickoff. At about 2:00 this afternoon the Centralia High School game at Rochester was also canceled after school district officials were notified of a potential threat, which was later deemed credible.
Law enforcement officials are involved in both cases as they continue to investigate. Tumwater school district officials released a formal statement on their Facebook page announcing the cancelation.
Details on rescheduling the game will be announced at a later time.
Tumwater School District Statement
Earlier today, we notified our families and staff about a social media threat and the increased law enforcement presence planned for tonight’s Pioneer Bowl.
As the investigation continues, and out of an abundance of caution, we have made the decision to cancel tonight’s Pioneer Bowl event. The safety and security of our students, staff, families, and community remain our highest priority.
This decision was not made lightly. We recognize the significant time, effort, and preparation that students, staff, coaches, volunteers, and families have invested in tonight’s event. From our football teams’ practices and preparation to the combined performances and countless behind-the-scenes efforts that make Pioneer Bowl possible, we know many people were looking forward to this special evening.
We appreciate the cooperation and understanding of our families and community members as we work closely with law enforcement to assess the situation. Additional information about when the game will be played will be shared at a later date. Thank you for your support and understanding.
