Rochester 46, Montesano 20
(Rochester, WA) Rochester came into the game undefeated on the year, 6-0 and #2-ranked in the RPI. They have been among the most dominant teams in the state in the classification and looked to continue their success against a league foe that has lived in the state tournament for the last two decades. Montesano came into the game 3-3 but was 2-0 in league and tied with Rochester at the top of the 1A Evco. The winner of this game would claim the top spot in the league, which would mean a lot as playoffs and the eventual state tournament approach. Rochester moved to 1A last season and has put together two great seasons so far and had to go through the top dogs in the conference in Montesano.
1st Half
Rochester would get the ball to start the game and lead off with a bang. On the first play of the game, RB Maddox Rogers for Rochester broke free for a 74-yard run to give the Warriors the lead just seconds into the game. A two point conversion would make it 8-0. Montensano would respond well with chunk yardage from QB Krew Messick and RB Falen Verville but it was the pass game that woulf strike first for the Bull dogs. Messick would find Brody Williamsen for a 13-yard touchdown and bring the score to 8-6 after a missed two point conversion. Once again, Maddox Rogers would strike fast for Rochester once with a 68 yard touchdown run just a few plays into the drive but a missed two point conversion would bring the score to 14-6.
Disaster would strike for Montesano just a few plays into their next drive as a fumble would give the ball back to the Warriors inside the red zone. They would cash in on a one yard touchdown run from Owen Simpkins and lead 20-6. For Montensano, while penalties initially backed them up, they made a big play of their own as Krew Messick found a wide open Falen Verville for 70 yards and the touchdown. With the two point conversion, it brought the game to 20-14, but not for long, and Maddox Rogers once again burst free for a 61 yard touchdown and his third of the day. Montesano would put together a long drive towards the end of the half which ended with a 7-yard touchdown from Falen Verville. Rochester would lead 28-20 going into the second half.
2nd Half
Montesano started the second half but was swarmed by the Rochester defense, who forced a turnover on downs. With the ball back, the Warriors would put together their longest drive of the game, which took up most of the third quarter. With less than 40 seconds left in the third, Maddox Rogers once again found his way into the end zone for a 14-yard TD and his fourth of the day. With the score 34-20, Montensano needed points fast with just a quarter to do so. However, Rochester’s defense would send the pressure and force a fumble, which was picked up by Rochester’s Cody Galpin, who ran it all the way back for a 68-yard return.
That lead for Rochester widened to 40-20, and time began to become the enemy of the Bulldogs. Montensano could not convert on a fourth down and gave the ball back to Rochester. Maddox Rogers would put the cherry on top of his night with a 48-yard touchdown run for his fifth of the day. Rochester would win 46-20 and proved once again why they are one of the very best teams in the 1A classification as they improve to 7-0. Montensano falls to 3-4 on the year but kept it competitive for most of the game, and a few costly turnovers were the major difference.
Chehalis Holiday Inn Express MVP of the Game
The Chehalis Holiday Inn Express MVP of the game went to Maddox Rogers, who rushed for an insane 289 yards on 17 carries and had five touchdowns. He is one of the best players in the 1A classification and proved it once again against one of their toughest opponents all year and in a game that meant a lot as the season progresses. He was unstoppable and good for a big play any time the ball was in his hands. He put together a stat line that is rarely seen in high school football and made it look easy.
