(Denver, WA) The Seahawks were hoping a quick start would help them get past a loss on Sunday that they know they should have won. Turnovers and the inability to sustain long drives has been a huge issue for the Seattle offense and in the first half it didn’t look like it was solved.

1st Half Struggles

Rashid Shaheed returned the opening kick-off to the Denver 29. The Seattle offense looked like they were ready to get the ball out quickly and take what the Denver defense would give them moving the ball across the 50 to the Bronco 45. Seattle then gave up two sacks in a row and had to punt it away.

Denver’s opening drive also ended up with a punt and the Hawks took over near mid-field and was able to pick up one first down and settled for a 55-yard field goal from Jason Myers.

Broncos Offense take Charge

On Denver’s 2nd possession, the Broncos began on their own 26 and began a long 16-play drive converting a 3rd and 3, 3rd and 8 and 4th and 3 before ending up on the 4-yard line for a 2nd and goal. JK Dobbins was handed the rock and he followed his lead blocker over the right side and walked into the end zone for 6. Wil Lutz they added the PAT and it was 7-3 with 12:52 to play in the 2nd quarter.

Seattle couldn’t do much with the ball on their next possession and had to punt it away trying to pin the Broncos inside the 10 but a rare miss by punter Michael Dickson shanked it out at the 21.

Denver followed up their 16-play TD drive with a 9-play 79-yard TD drive. The key play was a 20-yard pass interference penalty on Devon Witherspoon in the end zone placing the ball on the 1-yard line. RJ Harvey then plowed in for 6 and Denver took a 14-3 lead.

Seattle would not threaten again, they would fumble when the ball popped out of the hands of Shaheed as he was tackled and the ball came down right on top of the defenders knee. Fortunately the Broncos couldn’t take advantage and went to the half with Denver lead ing by 11, 14-3.

2nd Half Slow Start for both offenses

The 3rd quarter was a tug-o-war between the two defenses as Denver had a 4 and out and two 3 and outs. The Seahawks countered with a decent drive of 9 plays that stalled at the Bronco 29 for a 4th and 12. Myers came on for a 47-yard field goal but hit the upright and it remained 14-3. On their 2nd 3rd quarter possession the Hawks would again punt it away.

4th Quarter Wake-Up Call

The Seahawks woke up in the 4th and came storming back. Facing a 4th down and 4 on the Bronco 39, QB Sam Darnold hit Jaxon Smith-Njigba for 7 yards and the 1st down. Darnold then scrambled 18-yards on a 3rd and 10. George Holani was handed the ball on a 1st and 10 from the 14 and nearly got in with a 13-yard run. Holani got it again and over the right side powered in for the score to make it 14-9.

Seattle went for 2 to make it a 3-point game and Darnold sent it to the back of the end zone where the pass was batted up and Shaheed was able to grab it and get his feet down for the conversion and it was 14-11 with 5:41 to play.

The Seattle defense rose to the occasion and stopped Denver in a 3 and out giving the ball back to the Hawks. Facing a 3rd and 1 Darnold dropped back to pass and threw an ill-advised pass to the flat where it was intercepted by Denver’s Kris Abrams-Draine on the Denver 31 with just 1:31 left to play. Seattle had all three time-outs left so a 3 and out was a must or the game was over.

The Hawks defense stuffed the Broncos on 3 straight plays and resulted in just a 15-second drive and they were forced to punt. Seattle returner Shaheed received the ball on the Seattle 15 and he returned it 31-yards to the 46. With 3-seconds to play they had worked it down to the Denver 16 and Myers came on to punch through the 34-yard field goal with 3-seconds to play which ended up pushing the 14-14 game to overtime.

Same Old problem kills comeback in OT

Seattle came into the game knowing they had to clean up turnovers. They had fumbled and then an interception late nearly killed their chances of getting to OT.

Seattle received the opening kick of OT and that old nemisis raised it’s ugly head once again. Seattle was on their own 28 facing a 3rd and 7, Darnold dropped back to pass and threw to his left but the Bronco’s Ja’ Quan McMillen read it all the way and picked off the pass giving Darnold his 2nd interception of the game.

Denver didn’t need to do much as they took over on the Seattle 43. A 5-yard run, followed by a 3-yard rush and then an inciompletion sent Denver kicker Wil Lutz out for the game winning attempt. Lutz drilled the 53-yard kick right down the middle and Denver scored their only points of the 2nd half in a walk-off win.

Seattle once again turned the ball over multiple times and again it cost them the game.

Seattle will head home and now with some extra days because of the Thursday night game. They will need to re-group with a record of 3-3. The 3 losses is the number of losses they finished with all of last season.

Seattle will next host Kansas City on Sunday night football on October 25th.

Denver is now 4-2 and will travel to Arizona on the 25th.
