Emerald Ridge 28, Heritage 0
(Puyallup, WA) In a non-league match-up between the visiting Heritage Timberwolves and the Emerald Ridge Jaguars were playing each other for only the 2nd time ever. The two teams met in 2018 and the Jags won that one. The Timberwolves were looking to even the historical series at one apiece.
Efficient 1st Quarter
The Jaguars were very efficient in the 1st quarter with two possessions and scoring on both long drives. In their opener Emerald Ridge began on their own 33 and struck quickly with a 27 yard completion from QB Brayden Paulino finding Hunter Rusler who was wide open and had he been able not to step out of bounds after catching the long ball he would have scored.
Rusler then took a screen 19 yards and the Jags drove it down to the 4. Moose Masaniai then powered into the end zone for the score with 8:36 to go in the 1st quarter. Grayson Arndt hit the PAT to make it 7-0.
After Heritage picked up a couple of 1st downs on their first possession the drive stalled in midfield and then the punt was partially blocked by Royal Lexing and the ball rolled to the Emerald Ridge 45.
The Jags began their second drive and were more ground attack focused picking up 34 yards on their first two carries. The Jags would get a 1st and 10 on the 9 but went backwards setting up a 3rd and goal from the 12.
Tre Robinson would barrel his way up the field to the 2 for E-R creating a 4th and 2. Robinson would get the call again and was hit at the line of scrimmage but spun out of it and dove for the goal line getting the score on a tremendous second effort. The PAT was good and with 1-second to play in the 1st quarter it was 14-0.
Heritage would take over on their own 28 and then reel off 15 straight plays picking up 3 1st downs on 4th and 2’s. After play #15, it was 4th and goal on the 3 for the Timberwolves. QB Graydon Burns would drop back to pass and find a receiver in the flat in a one-on-one but corner Chai Chatters was able to pull him down short of the goal line. The ended after 16 plays and nearly 9 minutes off the clock.
The Jags were going to be careful having to come out of their own endzone from the 3. They kept it on the ground and a couple of chunk plays gave them some room to operate. E-R was on their own 36 when Tre Robinson busted off a 64-yard sprint up the far sideline in for the score. With less than a minute to play in the half the Jags took a 21-0 lead and that’s how the half would end.
2nd Half
The 2nd half was a turn-over on downs, punts, penalties and interception fest. Heritage had one huge drive that began on their own 24 and drove down to about the 1 1/2-yard line and could get a 1st down at the 1 and a touchdown with another yard. It was a 15 play drive and on the 15th play big Vaopele Sefo stepped through and stuffed the run attempt on the 2-yard line.
The Jags would punt kt away but the Timberwolves would get picked by Timothy Woodard. This gave the ball back to E-R on their own 40. With just 1:04 left to play in the game the reserves were in and freshman Anthony Linn took the hand-off found a big hole over the right side and took it to the house for a 60-yard TD run. Arndt added the PAT for the final score of 28-0
Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP
The Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP went to the Jags Tre Robinson who had 7 carries for 127 yards and 2 touchdowns averaging more than 18 yards per carry.
What’s Next?
Emerald Ridge improved to 3-0 and now will head to Sumner next Friday night to face the two-time defending 4A State Champs as they open SPSL lesgue play.
Heritage drops to 1-2 and they will open conference play next week as well when they travel to Evergreen (Van). Both games kick-off at 7pm next Friday.
