Sumner 3, Lake Stevens 0
(Sumner, WA) Both teams came into this match with some good wins and chinks in the armor. Lake Stevens sported a 3-1 record with wins over Bothell, Seattle Prep and Woodinville while dropping one to Bishop Blanchet. The Vikings have outscored their opponents so far 7-4.
The Sumner Spartans are 2-1 with 3 matches on the record. They shut out Fife 3-0 and defeated Skyview 3-1 while losing by that same score to Mount Si. For the season Sumner has also outscored their opponents 7-4 on the season.
1st Half
The two teams battled back and forth with several scoring opportunities but both defenses kept the scoreboard blank. The Spartans would break through in the 16th minute. Chloe Zehnder sent a beautiful crossing shot into the box to team mate Praslin Woodward who headed it perfectly past the keeper and into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
The 1-0 lead would hold up to halftime and the Sumner Spartans took the 1 goal lead over the Vikings to the break.
2nd Half
After the halftime break Lake Stevens played with a little more urgency on the offensive side of the field. Sumner withstood the
opening pressure by the Vikings and countered with even more pressure.
In the 60th minute Sydney Berry ran down a pass and after dibbling by a couple defenders sent a bending shot past the Lake Stevens goalie.
The final goal of the match came in the 73rd minute. Adelaide Pruitt sent a perfect pass into the 18 yard box for Chloe Zehnder to finish with a low shot just under the charging Tia Zeddies’ arms.
The final score doesn’t show how competitive this game was. Sumner played very well on offense while Lake Stevens played tough defense and got a solid effort in the midfield.
Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP
The Spartans Chloe Zehnder was named the Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP of the game. Zehnder assisted with the 1st goal and finished it off with the 3rd goal late in the match.
What’s Next?
The Sumner Spartans improve to 3-1 and host Gig Harbor on Thursday in their final non-league match before they start conference play next Tuesday against Puyallup.
Lake Stevens drops to 3-2 and are off until next Tuesday when they also begin league play against Arlington.
