Adna 4, Goldendale 3
(Adna, WA) The Goldendale Timberwolves are to a fast start with a 2-0 record recording a pair of shutouts 1-0 over Granger in their opener and then an 8-0 one-sided affair against Mabton. The Timberwolves haven’t played a match in a week and have traveled to the west side of the state to take on the Adna Pirates.
The Pirates have 4 matches in the books and began with a win at Lopez Island. Since then, they’ve hit a 3-game skid losing a combined 15-2. The Pirates haven’t dodged tough competition losing to 1A Elma, always tough Mount Vernon Christian and the Highland Scotties.
1st Half
Adna was firing on all cylinders out of the gate on Tuesday. The Pirates were pushing the backline of Goldendale and put quite a bit of pressure on keeper Emma Gorrod early. Vivian Ervin, Jocelyn Fahlenkamp, and Sophia Olson kept the ball out of the net early but in the 6th minute things changed. Haley Roundtree took advantage of a softly hit goal kick and jumped the ball in the 18-yard box. She quickly pulled the trigger and fired a shot into the back of the net to give Adna an early 1-0 lead.
Madi Otten was the catalyst of the Adna attack but had solid help from Alyson Terry as the Pirates kept the pressure on. A couple of the through balls were just a bit heavy which would not allow Adna to extend their lead for awhile. 8th grader Charlotte Deguise was also involved in the pressure Adna continued to put on Goldendale. The Timberwolves would get a look on a breakaway by Hayden Sheridan but her shot was saved by Lillian Montat. A ball was chipped high into the air and Deguise would just get a piece of it to redirect it into the net for a 30th minute goal for the Pirates. A defense of Olivia Chapman, Ella Goodman, and Marlowe Fuller prevented Goldendale from getting on the board and Adna took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
2nd Half
For as dominant as Adna was in the first half, Goldendale matched that out of the gates in the second half. The Timberwolves got quite the pep talk from head coach Anna Demott and looked like a totally different team in the second half. The attack was sharp as Sierra Blunt, Jaclyn Coronel, and Hayden Sheridan dominated the midfield and they started to really put pressure on Adna goalie Lillian Montat. In the 49th minute, they had their breakthrough off of a corner from Piper Messenger as Carly Beasley poked the ball into the net to make it 2-1. Two minutes later, Hayden Sheridan won a good battle for the ball and hit another shot to equalize the score. Two minutes after that, an Adna own goal had turned a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 lead for Goldendale.
Adna was clearly rattled while Goldendale just continued to build momentum. Aubrie and Aaliyah Sanchez both stepped up in the second half for the Timberwolves, but Marlowe Fuller was outstanding for Adna’s defense in the back half as well. Gracie Stone saw a lot of important time on the field in the second half as well as Adna tried to create something with Madi Otten dealing with some injury issues. However, the Timberwolves defense continued to shutdown every Adna look to preserve their lead late.
Things got even crazier in the closing minutes of this one. Madi Otten returned to the match late and as Adna needed to find a goal to at least put themselves in position for a draw. Adna would put together some strong runs and a foul would give them a set piece opportunity. Otten would go down with what seemed to be leg cramps right as the Pirates Alyson Terry took a free kick. The ball found Haley Roundtree and she would make the most of hit with her second goal in the 78th minute to tie it at 3-3. Minutes later, Roundtree won a possession and the Pirates sent one long. Charlotte Deguise flagged it down and won a one-on-one battle to fire in another shot and her second goal in the 80th minute. It was complete chaos in a five-goal second half but Adna matched their season total for goals scored in this one to earn a dramatic and wildly entertaining 4-3 win over Goldendale.
Chehalis Holiday Inn Express MVP
Our Chehalis Holiday Inn Express MVP of the match when to Haley Roundtree for Adna. The sophomore got the scoring started with a goal in the 6th minute and then was a thorn in the side of Goldendale all match long. She sprung a number of attacks and made the Timberwolves transition from defense to offense much more difficult in the middle of the field. She put a bow on her performance with a late equalizer for her second goal and won the possession that led to the match winner for the Pirates.
What’s Next
Adna snaps their three-game losing streak to move to 2-3 on the season. The Pirates will get right back to action on Wednesday when they visit the 4A Bethel Bison at 6pm. Goldendale will return home with a 2-1 record but very battle tested early on in the season. The Timberwolves visit La Salle for a league matchup on Thursday at 6pm.
