Final Sumner 38, Olympia 8

(Sumner, WA) Sumner and Olympia both finished 2nd in their SPSL 4A divisions. Sumner lost a close game to the north champion Puyallup for their only loss of the season. Olympia’s lone loss of the season came at the hands of the champions of the south Graham-Kapowsin. Both teams already advanced to the 4A round of 32 but a win would help both teams when the seeding committee makes their final judgements.

1st Half

The Sumner Spartans took the opening kickoff to their 35 yard line. One play later a jet sweep by Zab Zenkner went 65 yards for a touchdown. Bergen Eriksson hit the PAT and Sumner took a 7-0 lead just 21 seconds into the game.

Olympia went 3 and out on their first drive but got the ball back after a Sumner fumble. The Bears went 3 and out again but got a turnover on downs on Sumner’s next drive.

Sumner forced a fumble of their own to get the ball back with 18 seconds left in the first quarter. After a couple of 15 yard penalties by Olympia’s defense helped them get down the field. The Spartans scored their 2nd touchdown of the game on a 1 yard keeper by quarterback Brennan Abbott for a 14-0 lead.

The Bears answered back with an 8 play 6+ minute drive that was kept going by a couple Sumner personal fouls. The drive ended with a 1 yard touchdown plunge by David Ukwu. The initial PAT was blocked but a flag against Sumner moved the ball half the distance and Olympia went for 2. Ibrahima Diallo ran it in to make it a 14-8 game.

Sumner got a big return from Brody Gillaspy to the Olympia 30 yard line. The drive ended with a 9 yard touchdown pass from Abbott to Zenkner for a 21-8 lead. The Bears went to the air trying to get a quick score before the half but ended up turning the ball over on downs with 57 seconds left in the first half.

It took 3 plays and 32 seconds for Sumner to score. This time it was Brennan Abbott to Ashton Pillard from 23 yards out and another Eriksson PAT made it 28-8 lead going into halftime.

Halftime Sumner 28, Olympia 8

Olympia got the ball to start the 2nd half. The Bears put together a 16 play drive all on the ground that took all of the 3rd quarter. Unfortunately for Olympia the drive ended on a turn over on downs at the Sumner 5 yard line.

The Spartans first drive of the second half went 95 yards and ended with a 1 yard touchdown run by AJ Barnby to push the lead to 35-8. After forcing a 3 and out Sumner got the ball back on their own 49 yard line.

The drive stalled and the Spartans settled for a 23 yard field goal made by Bergen Eriksson for the 38-8 lead.

Olympia gave one final push after getting the ball back with 1:25 left on the clock. A 42 yard run by David Ukwu got the Bears going in the right direction but they would run out of time before they could get back into the endzone.
