(Seattle, WA) In their second straight prime-time game, the Seattle Seahawks were hoping to duplicate what they did to the Kansas City Chiefs last Sunday night, when the Chicago Bears came to town to take on the Hawks in front of the home crowd at Lumen Field on Monday night.
Both the Seahawks and the Bears made headlines during the week with big trades as the Seahawks traded with Indianapolis for Quinton Nelson, an eight-time Pro Bowl offensive guard. Meantime the Bears made a big move with the Tennessee Titans to get defensive lineman Jeffrey Simmons for two first-round draft choices. The question was: which big trade would return instant benefits? The answer: the Chicago Bears.
Seattle would receive the opening kickoff and a quick three-and-out put them in a punting situation. Michael Dixon boomed one inside the 5. It bounced out at the goal line and Nehemiah Pritchett knocked it inside the 5 preventing the ball from going into the endzone. As it was bouncing the Hawks’ Rodney Thomas came sliding in and pushed it into the end zone. Instead of having the ball on the 3 to start their first drive, the Bears ended up out on the 20-yard line.
Chicago then put on a clinic, going 17 plays, 80 yards, and scoring on a Caleb Williams to Luther Burden touchdown pass. The extra point was good and drained 8:32 off the clock, leaving 5:25 to go in the first with just two possessions in the game.
Chicago’s defense was simply overwhelming all night led by Simmons and Montez Sweat. Simmons had 6 tackles in the ball game, a sack, and a quarterback pressure, while Sweat had 2 tackles, a sack, and 3 quarterback pressures. Simmons and Sweat had 2 of the 3 sacks on Darnold. Devin Bush had the third one.
The Seahawks were forced in another three-and-out and then punted away again on their second possession. After Chicago went three-and-out. Seattle finally had an answer, they drove the ball down to the 17 but stalled and settled for a Jason Myers 27-yard field goal, making it 7-3.
It looked like the Seahawks might get something going forcing the Bears to punt again. The punt was partially blocked but still went 45 yards as multiple Seahawks just let the ball roll down the field and they began their next drive on their own 30-yard line. That led to another 3-and-out, giving the Chicago Bears the ball back on their own 27-yard line. The Bears would then boot a 44-yard field goal to go up 10-3. They’d add another field goal with just 1:08 left to go in the half to push the lead to 13-3, knowing that they’d get the ball to begin the third quarter.
Seattle would have a minute and a half to work with all three timeouts as they lined up on their own 29-yard line. The 5-play drive would go the distance, 71 yards, and end in a touchdown to make the score 13-9 with about 30 seconds left to play in the half. Darnold would find Jackson Smith-NJigba on a 12-yard pass and then capped it off with a 43-yard bomb that JSN was able to get into the end zone for the quick-strike score. Myers, however, badly missed the PAT, so going into half Seattle trailed 13-9.
To begin the second half both teams would go three-and-out. Chicago, on their second drive, would take over on their own 31-yard line and the Bears would go 69 yards in 10 plays as D’Andre Swift would pound it in from the 1-yard line, the extra point was good and pushed their lead to 20-9 with 5:38 left to play in the third quarter.
The Seahawks look like they may bounce right back as George Holani, on a kick return, got it out to the 40-yard line. Once again the drive would stall, setting up another Jason Myers field goal attempt but this one is blocked by Austin Booker denying the Seattle offense handing the ball back to the Bears.
The Seahawks’ defense’s brightest moment of the ball game came on the next series as DeMarcus Lawrence punched the ball out of the hands of TE Colston Loveland and then recovered the ball on the Chicago 25-yard line, giving the Seahawks a chance to get right back into the ball game.
Seattle did just that. Jadarian Price ran the ball a couple of times for 13 yards and a 5-yard penalty against the Bears and then Sam Darnold would find Cooper Kupp in the end zone for 6. Seattle would go for two to make it a three-point game and Darnold would drop one in for Tory Horton in the back of the end zone. Horton dragged his foot and got in to make it 20-17 with 11:46 left to play in the ball game.
The hometown fans we’re loud and back in the ball game but the Chicago Bears would not be denied and quickly put a damper on a potential comeback story. Chicago drove down the field in just six plays, going 56 yards, and D’Andre Swift would score his second touchdown of the ballgame to push the lead to 27-17.
On Seattle’s next possession Darnold tried to dump the ball off. It was blocked up in the air by by the Bears’ Booker and then intercepted by James Lynch, another defensive lineman, handing the ball back to the Bears on the Seahawks 6-yard line. Chicago would finish the job four plays later with Swift’s third touchdown of the night, the extra point good and with less than five minutes to play in the game, it was 34 to 17.
The Seahawks’ defense never looked in sync all night and the offense just had a tough time getting anything going. Seattle will have to quickly regroup as they’re back in action next weekend with another home game against the Arizona Cardinals. The Cardinals will come in flying high off of that crazy comeback upset win at Dallas on Sunday. Seattle drops to 4-4 on the season.
Suddenly the Bears and the NFC North are the division to watch, with multiple teams looking at getting to the postseason. The NFC West, certainly not as intimidating as they were coming into the season, with Seattle and the LA Rams struggling early on in 2026. The Bears will host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers next weekend, a team that has literally thrown for 60 passing yards over the last two weeks. The Buccaneers won 16-0 on Sunday, hosting Atlanta with zero completed passes. The 6-2 Bears, with their revamped and reinvigorated defense, may not need much more motivation than that to get after the Bucs next week.
