Curtis 27, Bonney Lake 14
(University Place, WA) In an SPSL league crossover match, Bonney Lake went on the road to take on Curtis for a battle of the four seeds in their SPSL leagues. The winner was to advance to the round of 32 and make the playoffs, while the loser’s season would unfortunately come to an end. Bonney Lake came into the game 2-6 on the year and 2-3 in the SPSL South. Curtis came into the game 3-4 on the year and 2-3 in league.
1st Half
The first half started with a three-and-out for both teams. Curtis would turn it over on downs to start and then force Bonney Lake to punt, but a bad snap put the ball on the ground, and Curtis would recover the fumble at their own 16-yard line. Curtis would have another three-and-out but miss a field goal as the game remained scoreless. On Bonney Lake’s next drive, penalties would help them down the field, but another fumble went right into the hands of Curtis’ Levi Angelo.
This would give the Viks good field position, and they would capitalize with a 2-yard touchdown run from Dontevian Ray. After Curtis forced Bonney Lake to punt, Ray would strike again on 4th and 4 and burst free for a 28-yard touchdown run and his second of the day. Curtis would enter the half leading 14-0.
2nd Half
Bonney Lake would get the ball to start the second half and punt early. The Panthers forced a punt right back, and a botched kick landed in the hands of Cody Cano, who returned it all the way inside the two-yard line. A QB sneak later from Austin Goodnight cashed in for a touchdown to make the score 14-7. The defense would come through again for Bonney Lake as Xavier Wise would jump a pass from Curtis QB Sam Patterson and intercept the ball. Wise ran it back for a touchdown to tie the game 14-14.
Curtis did not seem fazed, however, and put together a long and methodical drive with a well-balanced run and pass game. Sam Patterson would find Jackson Meno multiple times for short yardage while Dontevian Ray got going again on the ground. However, it was Davion Green who would take the lead for the Vikings on a nine-yard touchdown run to bring the score to 21-14. Curtis had taken a lot of time off the clock, and Bonney Lake looked to put together a drive. However, on third down and long, Rashaun Lavatai would make a big play and bat the ball down at the line, forcing the Panthers to punt.
Once again with the ball back, Curtis would keep on chewing clock with the run game. Once again, Davion Green would find the end zone for another nine-yard touchdown run and put the Vikings up 27-14. Bonney Lake could convert on fourth down on their last drive, and Curtis would knee the ball down to take home the win. Curtis advances to the round of 32 for another year in a row while Bonney Lake’s season unfortunately comes to an end.
Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP of the Game
The Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP went to Davion Green, who finished with 6 carries for 22 yards and 2 touchdowns. It was as much the yardage as the moments when he scored. He had not come into the game as a running back until the third quarter, and on his second carry of the game, he rushed in for a touchdown to give Curtis back the lead. A few carries later, and he found himself in the end zone one more time to ice the game and send his team to the playoffs. An outstanding game for Green, who was as efficient as you could ask a player to be.
