Olympic 48, North Mason 20

(Belfair, WA) it was three grueling quarters of hard-nosed football in Belfair as the Olympic Trojans visited the North Mason Bulldogs and they fought to a near stalemate in an absolute Olympic League slugfest.

From the opening whistle both squads traded heavy blows, answering each other’s score for score. Olympic, led by dynamic plays from Brycen Williams, RaShaun Webb and Kai Devine, had a slight advantage but the Bulldogs refused to go away, countering with an aerial attack that kept them within striking distance at 27-20 heading into the fourth quarter.

Both teams are trying to keep their Olympic League title hopes alive. North Mason is just one play away from completely flipping the script on the Trojans. But they could never find that winning combination to take a late lead in the fourth quarter. With about 7 minutes left in the ball game, it remained a tenuous 27-20 lead for Olympic.

Then it happened. The roof came crashing down on the host North Mason Bulldogs, beginning with a breakaway run by Olympic’s Brycen Williams who already had a long scoring run in the game, with a spectacular 60-yard rushing touchdown to make it 34-20.

On North Mason’s next possession the Olympic defense was able to knock loose the ball and recovered a crucial bulldog fumble on the North Mason 20-yard line. The Trojans wasted no time turning that into points as Jayden Menchion took it 20 yards to the house on a sweep to the left, extending the lead to 41-20.

The icing on the cake, as North Mason was trying to get at least one more score in before the final horn sounded: Josiah Hooper stepped in front of a pass on the 5-yard line and took it 95 yards to the house for a massive pick-6 touchdown, finishing off the scoring at 48 to 20.

Olympic League Championship implications

Olympic’s win certainly shifts the Olympic League title picture. The Trojans still control their own destiny heading into the regular season finale. The Olympic League does not use head-to-head results as a tiebreaker for awarding team titles rather final league records only. If two teams are tied at the top of the league standings with identical records they would both tie for the league championship.

North Mason’s hope for a league title ended with this loss but they are still in serious contention for postseason play.

Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP of the Game

the West 42 Sports Crew had several choices to make for the MVP of the game but ultimately decided it would go to Brycen Williams. Williams fended off tackles for multiple scores, including that 60-yard brilliant run.

What’s Next?

Olympic improves to 5-1 in league play and 6-2 overall, tied for first with North Kitsap, who’s 7-1 and 5-1. Olympic can Assures itself a tie for the league title when they return home next week to take on Bremerton. A win over Bremerton and a North Kitsap loss would give the Trojans the outright league title.

North Mason drops to 4-2 in league play and 5-3 overall and has been knocked out of the regular season title contention but again plenty of postseason action is still in front of the Bulldogs. They are currently tied with Bainbridge and Bremerton, all three at 4-2, in Olympic League action. The Bulldogs travel to Bainbridge next week, trying to get to 5-2 in league play. A win over Bainbridge, and Bremerton losing to Olympic, would solidify the Bulldogs in third place.
