Onalaska 1, Napavine 1

(Napavine, WA) Already meeting once this season in what was a non-league game, the Onalaska Loggers and Napavine Tigers squared off for round two on Wednesday night at Tiger Stadium. A 7-1 dominant win in the first meeting for Onalaska had the Loggers feeling confident and for good reason as they looked to extend their winning streak to seven. A loss earlier in the week to Toledo had Napavine’s league title defense on life support as they would need a win against Onalaska and a Logger win over Toledo next week to create a three-way tie. That wasn’t the Tigers primary objective however as a positive result would lock them into the District Tournament.

1st Half

With the bombardment of offense that Onalaska threw at Napavine in their first meeting, the Tigers elected to go full defense and would drop everybody back…literally. Napavine would at some points have 11 players in their defending third to try to frustrate the Loggers and prevent Onalaska from having any open looks. The backline of Onalaska recognized this and pushed up to keep the ball well away from keeper Leah Hamilton. Kiley Talley and Mia Olson would immediately put the Loggers right back on the attack using wingers in Reese Marshall and Maci Reid to lead the attack.

Napavine would have some counters as Ava Wilson and Alexis Schutz pushed ahead using their speed but the numbers advantage always favored Onalaska when the Tigers got on the front foot. The defense was pretty strong for Napavine as Payton Reaves and Tiana Hamilton prevented too many opportunities for Onalaska. Leighton Underhill did get a good look for Onalaska but Myah Kadoun was a goalie on a mission on Wednesday night and was knocking away every single shot while Napavine failed to get a shot off in the first half. Despite the possession dominance for Onalaska, we went to halftime scoreless.

2nd Half

Head coach Christopher VanClifford saw how Napavine was playing and everyone knew he would make an adjustment to try to create some confusion for Napavine and better opportunities for the Onalaska attack. The key adjustment was star defender Kiley Talley. Already pushing forward quite a bit, Talley was well beyond midfield in the second half and began to take shots from far out. With plenty of power to get good looks, Onalaska was hoping one would sneak in or a shot would spill out for an easy clean-up goal. Despite the change, Myah Kadoun was too locked in and continued to keep a clean sheet even with the new strategy.

It wasn’t just Talley taking shots from far out as Onalaska continued to play the ball to the wings and get builds of play going from there. Reese Marshall and Maci Reid had terrific performances on the outside but the problems came when they tried to cross the shots into the middle. A change of angle changed the Loggers fortunes as Marshall had a ball out wide. She would lob a ball into the middle from closer to the center of the field and it checked up for Emilee Rodriguez. The freshman touched the ball by Kadoun to finally get the breakthrough. It took over an hour but finally Onalaska had their goal and a 1-0 lead.

The deficit forced Napavine to switch up their strategy as they trailed for the first time. The Tigers had to be more aggressive on offense and commit more numbers forward to try to find an equalizer. It was Cadence Bolen dealing with most of the pressure defensively but Alexis Schutz and Ameliya Stratton took over on the attack. Briley Fay also began to really get into the attack in the final 10 minutes or so as Napavine started to win the battle for possession. A free kick by Cadence Bolen was just knocked away by Leah Hamilton for her first save of the match. In stoppage time however, Bolen had the same opportunity in the exact same spot on the field. This time, the freshman dropped one perfectly over the top of Hamilton for the equalizer on one of the final kicks of the match. A completely different outcome was a welcome sight for Napavine as the Tigers improvement showed as they earned a 1-1 draw with a very strong Onalaska team.

Chehalis Holiday Inn Express MVP

Our Chehalis Holiday Inn Express MVP of the match went to Napavine freshman goalie Myah Kadoun. The Tiger keepers had 11 saves and only a couple were routine as she kept the Tigers right there with Onalaska. This match could have had the exact same result as their first meeting but Kadoun incredible night helped Napavine earn a draw in a big league match.

What’s Next

The draw almost keeps things exactly the same in the Central 2B League as Onalaska is now 10-3-1 overall and 5-0-1 in league play while Napavine is 7-6-1 overall and 4-1-1 in league play. The Loggers can still win the league by winning their final two matches, the next one being at home on Monday against Raymond/South Bend. Napavine needs just one league win to solidify the #3 spot at worst but their next game is a non-league matchup on Friday at 4pm at home against Cle Elum/Roslyn.
