Emerald Ridge 3, Graham Kapowsin 0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-22)
(Puyallup, WA) In a battle between two top-ten teams in the RPI and league foes, Graham Kapowsin went on the road to face Emerald Ridge. GK came into the game 10-2 and off a 3-1 win over Yelm. Graham Kapowsin was ranked #8 in the RPI and looked to continue their great season as the playoffs slowly approach. Emerald Ridge came into the game 12-1 and off a hard-fought 3-2 win over Puyallup. They came into the game #3-ranked in the RPI and looked to dominate as they had all season.
1st Set
The first set was competitive for the first 11 points for each team as they traded blows back and forth. The lead never got more than two points for either side for half of the set. Korbyn Hansen and Peyton Frederick got started early on the offensive end for ER while Kyndal Scott and Lillyokalani Ioane did the same for GK. Emerald Ridge would have a couple runs of points with help from Peyton Frederick and Tee Haizlip, which would give them a 16-11 lead. They would serve once again with Eva Orozco at the serving line and string together a dominant nine point run. In that stretch, Orozco had an ace and Peyton Frederick, Nevaeh Thomas, Tee Haizlip, and Katie Meade all had kills. A full team effort from Emerald Ridge as they would take set one 25-11.
2nd Set
ER picked up right where they left off and continued to punish the ball. While the offense was racking up points, the defense led by Olivia Puttler and Kat Matthiesen stayed strong and held off the GK offense coming back their way. Olivia Henderson got her night going as well with back-to-back kills followed by a block early in the set. LillyoKalani Ioane, Kyndal Scott, Brynn Schock and Anastasiia Zagurna steadily acquired kills for GK while the defense started to catch a rhythm late in the set, led by Carmen Stewart and Arianna Sei. The damage had been done by Emerald Ridge, though, and despite late efforts from GK, the Jaguars took set two 25-16.
3rd Set
The third set was the most competitive of the three and was a glimpse into why Graham Kapowsin is such a dangerous team. Both teams exchanged points back and forth as the set went on, and some new faces started to make impacts as well. Most notably, Ava Carlson for the Jaguars collected multiple kills and a block. Emerald Ridge would have momentum swing their way, and would find themselves leading by seven points, 16-9. This is where GK started to take over and showed their resilience. Ioane and Schock would light the fire with blocks and kills, and the defense was figuring out how to deal with the offensive firepower of Emerald Ridge well.
The Eagles would go on a six-point run late to tie the game up 22 after back-to-back kills from Brynn Schock followed by a block. Nevaeh Thomas would put an end to it, though, as she and Korbyn Hansen would both get a kill to make it 23-22 to get the win. A tough-fought set by GK, but the Jaguars were in full effect all night from every aspect of the game on their senior night.
Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP of the Game
Nevaeh Thomas earned the Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP of the Game, putting together a great offensive game and scoring every time she had the chance. Many players were worthy of MVP honors, but Thomas was a difference-maker down the stretch, and her abilities at the net are often game-changing. She had ten kills in the game as many of the last two being for the win on the Emerald Ridge senior night.
