Forks 31, Adna 24

(Forks, WA) The Adna Pirates took the long bus trip of US 101 to Forks. The Pirates and Spartans were meeting in an important Central 2B conference game. Both teams were 1-0 in league but Forks was unbeaten at 5-0 while Adna came in at 4-1.

Adna’s lone lost was to Onalaska dropping the non-league game on the Loggers home field 44-32. Onalaska is currently the 6th ranked team in the RPI  and Adna is #7. The Pirates have wins against 2B Toledo and Pe Ell-Willapa Valley along with wins against 1A Seton Catholic and Bellevue Christian.

Forks has been impressive running up their 5 game winning streak. They’re coming off a big 49-14 conference win over Raymond-South Bend. They’ve had big wins against 4 1A teams Columbia (White Salman, Hoquiam, East Jefferson and Klahowya. Forks came into this match-up outscoring their opponents 251-62 and are the current 5th ranked RPI team in the 2B classification.

Forks sets the tone early

The Spartans began their homecoming game with the ball and Forks made it pay off. It was an up and down drive with 4 penalties on the drive. Forks faced a long 3rd and 20 only to pick up the 1st down. On a 4th and long they hit for 26 yards down to the 7 for a 1st and goal. Bubba Hernandez got the hand-off and he powered in over the left side into the endzone for the score. Mario Reyes kicked the PAT and with 8:13 to play in the 1st Forks jumped out to a 7-0 lead.

The two teams then exchanged punts and on Adna’s 2nd possession QB Trevin Salme over threw his target and the Spartan’s Estevan Ramos made an outstanding interception to give the ball back to Forks on their on 10. They were able to move the ball to midfield but on the final play of the 1st quarter punted the ball which rolled down to the 5 yard line where Adna began their 3rd drive.

Field position sets up Spartans

Adna trying to work their way out of the shadow of their own endzone ended up turning the ball over on their own 21. Forks’ Kaden Ward forced the fumble and Lane Helvey recovered it to put Forks in a prime scoring position.

It looked like Adna may have avoided falling behind by two scores when Forks decided to go for it on a 4th and goal from the 15. But the Spartans pulled out a play from the back of the play book. Helvey pitched the ball to Hernandez trying to get around the right end but pulled up and launched a pass to Cash Barajas for 6. The Pirates blocked the PAT and with 7:02 to go in the half Forks led 13-0.

Adna on their next possession again had trouble moving the ball and ended up turning the ball over on downs on their own 42 with 4:21 to play in the half.

Forks had been having trouble really breaking big runs up the middle and found most of their success on the edges. On 1st down Helvey hit Ramos in the flat for a little screen. Ramos got a couple of blocks and then exploded down the field cut back a few times and took it to the house for a huge play to push their lead to 19-0. On the attempted kick of the PAT Adna jumped offside so Forks decided to go for 2. Hernandez got the hand-off and he busted it out to the left side and in to push their lead to 21-0 with 4:09 to play.

Adna got the ball back after an extended delay for an injured Forks player who was taken to the Forks hospital for what we believe was a leg injury to be evaluated.

The Pirates were held and faced a 4th and 7. Salme the QB is also the punter and he lined up deep when he took the snap he rolled to his left and then found Grayson Humphrey over the middle for a 17-yard pick up and a 1st down to the 42 of Forks. On the next play Salme handed off to Beau Miller who burst through a big hole right up the middle and went the distance to score with 2:47 to play. Adna went for 2 and Miller surged in to get on the board and trailed 21-8.

Adna then attemped an on-side kick but Mario Reyes smothered it right at the 50-yard line. After a 1st down rush to the 44, Helvey dropped back on 2nd and 4 and launched a shot deep into the hands of Barajas for his 2nd score on the 44-yard TD connection. Reyes added the PAT and took a 28-8 lead which would hold up until halftime.

2nd half comeback

Adna began with the ball to start with the 3rd quarter but another turnover by the Pirates handed the ball back to the Spartans on Pirates 37. The Adna did stand their ground after forcing a 4th and 7 at the 16. Reyes came on for the 26-yard field goal and he hit it to push their lead to 31-8.

The Pirates then put together their best drive of the game beginning on their own 42. They would drive it down to the 3-yard with a 1st and goal and Beau Miller powered in for the score. Salme then ran the 2-point conversion in on a QB sneak to make it 31-16.

Adna would get the ball back with 1:27 to play in the 3rd on a Beau Miller interception and the Pirates were back in business on the Forks 38. One play later, it was Miller romping the distance to score and then ran in the 2-point play and all of sudden the game was a one score difference at 31-24 with the entire 4th quarter to go.

Forks had a decent drive going in the 4th quarter but were facing a 4th and 3 and decided to punt it away and got a great roll to the Adna 2-yard line. The Pirates took-over with 8:34 to play in the game and worked their way to their own 48. On 1st down Salme dropped back to pass and was looking for Humphrey but over threw him and a spectacular diving interception was made by Barajas.

Forks was moving the ball on that drive but Adna had their time-outs and were desperately trying to get a stop. A big face mask penalty gave the Spartans an additional set of downs and eventually ran the clock down to just 5 seconds to play in the game and time ran out on the Pirate comeback.

Chehalis Holiday Inn Express MVP of the Game

The West 42 crew had several candidates to consider but one stood above with 2 touchdowns and the key interception stopping the momentum the Pirates had built up. Cash Barajas was the selection and a well earned honor.

What’s Next?
