10/8/2026

Emerald Ridge 20, Curtis 15

(Puyallup, WA) The Curtis Vikings came into the game a little beaten up after winning their season opener; they were on a 4 game losing streak, including a couple of tough losses to top-ranked Puyallup and 2-time defending 4A champs, Sumner.

Emerald Ridge was entering the Thursday tilt on the opposite side, with a 4-1 record and their lone loss to Sumner, 24-14, a game they led at halftime. So the Jags were feeling pretty good coming into week 6.

1st Half

Curtis would get the ball to start and quickly score the first points of the game on a 60-yard pass from Sam Patterson to Peter Shelton, who would run it in untouched to make it 7-0. Emerald Ridge would respond with a big play of their own as a few plays into their drive, Brayden Paulino found Tre Robinson in the flat. He would break multiple tackles and burst his way to a 54-yard touchdown to tie it 7-6 after a blocked PAT. Curtis would put together another nice drive and would find their way into the red zone. However, Moose Masaniai would make a great play on a deep pass for the interception and give the ball back to the Jaguars.

Curtis would force Emerald Ridge to punt but once again force a turnover as Tre Robinson would come down with a 50/50 ball in the end zone and gave Emerald Ridge the ball right back on the 20-yard line. The Vikings defense stayed strong and forced another punt but this time block the punt in the end zone. This would result in a safety and bring Curtis’ lead to 9-6. Curtis would recieve the ball after the safety but turn it over on downs after a sack from Jerin Biembongo. On the very first play of Emerald Ridge’s next possession, Tre Robinson would shoot out of a cannon and unleash for a 64-yard touchdown run. This would the Jaguars the lead 14-9 going into halftime after a successful two-point conversion.

2nd Half

Emerald Ridge got the ball to start the half but was forced to punt quickly as the Curtis defense stepped up. Curtis would then put together one of the longest drives of the season that spanned close to nine minutes. Tyce Kinley was the workhorse for most of the drive and was relentless on the ground, gaining chunk yardage time and time again. Kinley mixed with thre passing of Sam Patterson marched the Vikings down the field slowly but efficiently. The drive would end with a 3-yard touchdown run from Sam Patterson to give Curtis the lead 15-14.

Emerald Ridge would respond with just as much production as the run game would continue to dominate. Moose Masaniai and Tre Robinson would keep the engine running as they had all game. On a fourth down and long though Brayden Paulino would find Timothy Woodard for a clutch first down to move the chains. Emerald Ridge would retake the lead after a 2-yard touchdown run from Miguel Martinez to make it 20-15. Curtis would once again produce a drive that took up most of the fourth quarter.

With good field position to start, they made their move down the field. Short runs and passes steadily got them within striking range. With limited time, Dontevian Ray would burst through for a 26-yard run and put the Vikings at the four-yard line. The Emerald Ridge defense would make two goal-line stops but then horse-collar Sam Patterson, which moved the ball half the distance to the goal. On third and goal from the two-yard line, Miguel Martinez would tackle Ray for a loss. With less than a minute left on the clock, Curtis had one more attempt at a win. Patterson would drop back to pass and fire over the middle, but Miguel Martinez jumped in front of the ball for an interception. He would return it 60 yards before being brought down, and Emerald Ridge would win 20-15.

Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP of the Game

The Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP of the game went to Miguel Martinez who not only had a touchdown on the day, which gave Emerald Ridge the lead but also had a goal line stop for a loss of yards and the game winning interception. He single-handedly won the game for the game on back-to-back defensive plays in one of the biggest games of the year for the Jaguars. The game of his life in a game a massive game for his team. He made three plays that changed the entire game and walked away with the MVP because of it.
