Gig Harbor 31, Lincoln 28
(Tacoma, WA) The Gig Harbor Tides trying to turn their season around faces a tough assignment taking on the Lincoln Abes at the Lincoln Bowl. The Tides began the night 2-2 on the season but 1-0 Puget Sound League play after blanking Bellarmine Prep last week.
The Abes came in with a 3-0 overall mark and also 1-0 in league play after shutting out Central Kitsap last week. So a pretty important early conference showdown.
1st Half
Gig Harbor got the first possession of the game and put together a 6 and a half minute drive ending in a 1 yard touchdown run by quarterback Sawyer Hayes taking a 7-0 early lead.
After a nice return by JT Williams the Abes took over on the 44 of Gig Harbor. The drive would end with a 10 yard touchdown pass from Sione Kaho to Elijah Carney and the score was tied 7-7.
The Tides turned the ball over on downs on their next drive but would get the ball back quickly after Max Schwab picked off Kaho at the GH 42 yard line. Schwab would run in a 7 yard touchdown 9 plays later and a good PAT gave the Tides a 14-7 lead with 2:43 to go in the half.
A 3 and out by Lincoln gave Gig Harbor the ball back at the Lincoln 46 yard line. A 27 yard run put the Tides in striking distance and 2 plays later Hayes found Tristan Shipley in the back of the end zone for the 21-7 lead.
The final play of the first half saw Kaho throw his 2nd interception this time it was Cam Archer as time expired.
Halftime Gig Harbor 21, Lincoln 7
Lincoln’s first possession of the 2nd half ended with a 37 yard touchdown run by JT Williams to cut the Tides lead to 7. Gig Harbor put together another time consuming 5 minute
drive ending in Hayes’ 2nd 1 yard touchdown plunge for the 28-14 lead. A punt by Lincoln and a turnover on downs by Gig Harbor gave the Abes the ball back at their own 3 yard line with 8 minutes to play in the 4th quarter.
Kaho led the Abes down the field and finished the 10 play drive with a 26 yard touch down pass to Shyne Pastores but the PAT was blocked and Lincoln trailed by 8. A perfectly timed onside kick by Brayant Salazar gave Lincoln the ball back on the 50 yard line.
After a run for no gain the Stanford commit in Kaho found an open Aamir Foy for the 50 yard touchdown scamper. Lincoln had to go for 2 to even the score at 28. After being stopped initially the will power and leg drive by JT Williams got him into the end zone for the tie.
Lincoln tried another onside kick but touched the ball early and gave the Tides the ball back at the Lincoln 48 yard line.
Gig Harbor’s drive takes 4 and a half minutes but stalls at the 13 yard line. On 4th down the Tides call on kicker Caleb Kalafatich to retake the lead. The junior nails the 31 yard field goal and Gig Harbor hangs on to win 31-28.
Sumner Holiday Inn MVP
There were several players considered for Gig Harbor. Sawyer Hayes, Tristan Shipley and Caleb Kalafatich were all in the running but we settled on Max Schwab who had an interception and touchdown that gave the Tides a big momentum swing. Schwab also returned kicks and ran hard all game long.
