Graham Kapowsin 37, Olympia 19
(Olympia, WA) Olympia came into the game undefeated this season and the #8-ranked team in the 4A RPI. They had just won a blowout game against Yelm as they continued to dominate across various leagues. Graham Kapowsin came into the game 3-1 of the season, with their only loss being to the runners-up in the state championship last season, Lake Stevens. Besides that loss, it has been nothing but dominance from the Eagles as they looked to maintain their top spot in the SPSL 4A South.
1st Half
Graham Kapowsin got the ball to start the half and right away went to work with their high-octane offense. AJ Tuivaiave was surgical from the start, connecting with multiple receivers for big chunk yardage. It would take less than two minutes before GK would strike first. Tuivaiave would avoid contact on a pass play and dodge multiple defenders before shoveling a pass to running back Blake Pearson who would take it in for an 14 yard touchdown. Olympia would respond well on their first drive of the game with a drawn out and methodical drive led by Ibrahima Diallo, Braden Barrett and Aden Car. They would pick up chunk yardage after chunk yardage and would take up almost the entire rest if the first quarter. They cashed in though with a 13 yard pitch to Aden Carr to tie the game 7-7 going into the second quarter.
Once again in just a few minutes GK stormed down the field with big plays from AJ Tuivaiave and Trevon Mayfield. Once again GK’s offense was firing on all cylinders and they would go up another touchdown after a 5-yard run from Blake Pearson for six. The next drive from Olympia would look promising for a while as they continued their success to start the game, but penalties would stunt their offense. Penalties would start to rack up for both teams as tensions flared, but they drove Olympia too far back, and Graham Kapowsin would force a turnover on downs. With the ball back, Tuivaiave would unload a 60-yard bomb to Jayce Halasz. Just a few plays later, GK would secure another touchdown after a 15-yard run from Trevon Mayfield.
Once again, the Bears would have the ball, but the defense of the Eagles would force another stop with a turnover on downs. GK would run a few quick plays with limited time and get the clock down to under a second. They would send out the field goal unit and end the half with an amazing 43-yard field goal from Matthew Vollmer. Graham Kapowsin would lead 24-7 going into the second half.
2nd Half
Olympia would start with great field position after a penalty was enforced on the kickoff. Once again, Olympia would put together a productive drive and get within striking distance, but the defense of Graham Kapowsin would come through once again as George Woods would intercept a pass and give the GK offense the ball back. Just plays later, Trevon Mayfield would break free for a 68-yard touchdown, which broke the game open. Olympia would put together another long drive that took up almost the entire third quarter. GK would lead 31-7 going into the fourth.
Olympia would finally capitalize with a miraculous catch from Ryder Smith that pinballed around through multiple players’ hands before Smith secured it and ran it in for a touchdown from 36 yards out. After swapping possessions, GK would find themselves inside the five-yard line after multiple penalties from Olympia. Blake Pearson would get the hat trick on a five-yard shovel pass for his third touchdown of the day. Olympia would make one last surge as Ibrahima Diallo would get into the end zone for 23 yards. Time would run out in the end, and GK would take home the win 37-19 and move to 4-1 on the year and 2-0 in league. Olympia would suffer their first loss and move to 4-1 on the season and 1-1 in league play.
Sumner Holiday Inn MVP
The Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP of the game went to Trevon Mayfield, who had two touchdowns on the day, with one being for 68 yards. He finished with 4 carries for 55 yards and two receptions for 82 yards, with one running touchdown and one receiving touchdown. He was good for a big play anytime he had the ball in his hands, with his blazing speed that tore through any defenders in front of him. His presence on the field was a big game changer for Graham Kapowsin and he played a big part in their biggest win of the year.
