Wednesday, September 30 (Wild Card Series, Game 2)
Phillies 4, Braves 3 (10 Innings) (Series tied 1-1)
For the first time this postseason, we got extra innings as the Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves got day two of the Wild Card series underway. Teams to take game one of the Wild Card series have won 15 of the 16 series since the round began in the 2022 playoffs.
It was a good start for both teams as they got on the board in the 1st. A leadoff double by Trea Turner set the table for Bryce Harper to bring in a run with an RBI single to make it 1-0. A walk and two stolen bases for Ronald Acuña Jr. put a man on third with two outs and Atlanta cashed in with an RBI single for Matt Olson to make it 1-1 and allow both Christopher Sánchez and Tyler Mahle to settle in.
Atlanta really struggled with runners in scoring position in game two and went 3-10 in those situations. However, Philadelphia struggled completely at the plate as Mahle allowed just six hits and one walk in seven innings. Christopher Sánchez got out of a bases loaded jam in the 6th thanks to a huge double play hit into by Michael Harris II but the 7th wasn’t so kind. With a man on second and one out, Drake Baldwin drove a fly ball to right that was misread by Bryce Harper and ended up over his head for an RBI double to give the Braves the lead. A couple of batters later, Matt Olson extended the lead with a sacrifice fly and ended Sánchez’s day after 116 pitches.
The Phillies lack of offense was made up for by their power hitting. In the 8th, Kyle Schwarber crushed a solo shot before Bryce Harper made up for his mistake with a solo bomb of his own to tie the game at 3-3 just two batters into the inning. Another double play put out a fire before it got going for Atlanta in the bottom of the 8th. Quick innings in the 9th sent this one to extras.
In the playoffs, there is no automatic runner in extra innings so manufacturing a run would be much more difficult for the two NL East rivals. Didier Fuentes stayed on for the 10th and had retired five in a row before losing it all. Alec Bohm came to the plate and seemed to get jammed on a fastball on the inner half and sent it out to right field. He got just enough of it to get it out for a solo shot and the Phillies third solo home run of the game. 23-year-old Andrew Painter would pitch his third inning of relief for the Phillies in his first relief outing and first postseason appearance of his career, and the rookie was tremendous. He would allow a couple of singles in the 10th to put the tying run at second and winning run at first. Painter got ahead of Dom Smith 0-2 before throwing a ball…or so we thought. J.T. Realmuto challenged the call and the pitch did clip the inside corner for a called strike three to end it. Philadelphia’s three homers were enough as they downed Atlanta in extras 4-3 to force a winner-take-all game three on Thursday.

Braves 5, Phillies 3 (Atlanta lead series 1-0)
The postseason got underway with quite the thriller on Tuesday afternoon. Division foes met in the NL Wild Card round with Atlanta hoping that they could finally solve their playoff Philadelphia problem after being knocked out by the Phillies in 2022 and 2023.
Both teams scored early in this one as Philadelphia got on the board in the 1st against Chris Sale on an RBI double by Alec Bohm. Atlanta answered back with a two-out RBI single by Mike Yasztremski to even things up in the 2nd. Philly had to go to the bullpen first in the 6th and Atlanta cashed in and took their first lead with an RBI triple by Ozzie Albies to make it 2-1.
It was late when the game got wild. J.T. Realmuto hit his own triple to plate two and give the Phillies a 3-2 lead in the 7th. Philadelphia shockingly brought in their closer with nine outs to get as Jhoan Duran was on for the 7th. He threw a clean 7th but got in hot water in the 8th. With the bases empty and two outs, the Braves rallied with singles by Mauricio Dubón and Michael Harris II. The struggling Austin Riley came to the plate and changed the game as he sent the first pitch the other way into right center for a three-run, go-ahead home run to put Atlanta up 5-3. Raisel Iglesias then put the game away to give Atlanta the 5-3 win to go up 1-0 and raise a lot of questions about Don Mattingly’s decision to use his closer for multiple innings and before the 9th.

White Sox 6, Astros 3 (Chicago leads series 1-0)
For the first time in MLB history, both teams would use an opener in a playoff game. Neither the Chicago White Sox or Houston Astros got to line up their rotation as both battled for a playoff spot into the final weekend of the season. A rematch of the 2005 World Series would feature the surprise White Sox and the worst record in MLB postseason history in the 81-81 Astros.
Chicago’s opener Hagen Smith was much better than Houston’s opener AJ Blubaugh. Chicago scored in four of the first five innings with Sam Antonacci coming up with a two-run single in the second while Colson Montgomery left the yard with a solo shot in the 4th. Jordan Hicks picked up where Smith left off with a scoreless 4th before a single by Chase Meidroth made it 5-0 White Sox.
Houston wouldn’t go down without a fight as Nelson Velázquez hit a two-run home run in the 5th to make it 5-2 and bring the fans back to life. The Astros bullpen just was not good on Tuesday and allowed another run to score on a wild pitch in the 7th. Houston’s best chance came in the 8th Grant Taylor came in to pitch the 8th but allowed a couple singled to Jeremy Peña and Yordan Alvarez. An error by Chicago plated a run and brought the tying run to the plate but a strikeout of Yainer Diaz got them out of trouble. Taylor pitched the 9th as well and threw 54 pitches to earn the White Sox their first playoff win since 2021, also against the Astros.

Yankees 9, Red Sox 0
When these two teams face off in the regular season there is plenty of excitement and anticipation. But when they line-up to battle in postseason play it goes to another level. The Yankees came in with the advantage of being the home team for the best of 3 series.
Cam Schlittler got the start for New York and the Red Sox countered with Payton Tolle. The game began as a pitching dual with each facing 4 batters in the 1st inning but no damage.
In the 2nd inning Schlittler drew 2 ground outs and struck out Jarren Duran for a 3 up and 3 down inning. Schlittler would go on to pitch into the 7th inning giving up no runs, 2 hits, a walk and 10 strike-outs.
Tolle would go just 4.2 innings giving up a run on 5 hits, a walk and 4 strike outs. But Tolle had kept them in the game giving up just the one run and it was 1-0 after 4.
The Yankees got on the board in the 2nd inning when Austin Wells singled bringing home George Lombard Jr who singled and advanced to 2nd on a single by Anthony Volpe.
The Yankees were just settling in as they added another run in the 5th when Ben Rice hit a solo shot to center with the long ball going 423 feet. Rice was heating up and singled in another run in the bottom of 7 and New York added another run to lead 4-0.
Rice then put the game away for good after the Yankees scored on a sac fly they loaded the bases and Rice sent it deep to center again clearing the packed bases with a grand Slam pushing the Yankee lead to 9-0.
The Yankee’s pitching staf completed the shut out with Paul Blackburn and John Schreiber finishing the final 8 outs limiting the Red Sox to just 3 hits, the one walk and 11 k’s.

Padres 8, Cubs 0
The Padres and Cubs were the last of the 4 games to start the Wild Card round and a dominating prformance from the Padres pitching staff left little opportunity for the visitors to stay in the game.
Padres starting pitcher Michael King began the game by striking out the Cubs 1-2-3 hitters in the top of the 1st. King would go deep completing 7 innings giving up just 3 hits while striking out 8. he did walk 3 but gave up 0 runs. Yuki Matsui would pitch a 1-2-3 8th inning while Joe Musgrove would strike out the lead-off hitter in the top of 9 but then gave up a hit, a walk and another hit to load the bases. Musgrove finished off the Cubs with an short pop-up and closed the deal with a strike-out.
The Padres began scoring with the 1st batter and just added additional runs through 8 innings. Fernando Tatis Jr led the Padres off with a solo shot to center going 4-3 feet. Manny Machado also went deep in the opening frame to left center and San Diego jumped out to a 2-0 lead.
That pair would team up in the 3rd for the next run when Machado doubled driving in Tatis for a 3-0 advantage. The Padres would add another run in the bottom of the 4th with their 3rd HR of the game. This time off the bat of Xander Bogaerts who sent it 399 feet down the left field line.
Jackson Merrill slapped a 2 RBI single in the bottom of 5 and Ty France scored on a passsed ball to push their lead to 7-0. Tatis scored the final run in the 7th on a throwing error.
San Diego out hit the Cubs 13-3 with the 3 long balls.
