Black Hills 39, Hudson’s Bay 14
(Tumwater,WA) The Black Hills Wolves hosted the visiting Hudson’s Bay Eagles at Tumwater District Stadium in a non-league match-up.
The Set-up
The visiting Eagles came in with a 2-1 overall record but 0-1 in GSHL 2A play. Hudson’s Bay handled both Stevenson and Fort Vancouver. The Eagles then fell short in the league opener to Mark Morris.
The Black Hills Wolves are 0-2 and had their game last week cancelled when RA Long decided to cancel the rest of their varsity season. The Lumberjacks were dealing with multiple injuries and depth issues and were simply not able to field a competitive varsity team, to the point that it was dangerous for their really young team.
The Wolves had taken on a couple of really good programs, losing in the opening week to North Kitsap and then traveling to Eatonville, where the Cruisers showed they were going to be a tough draw for anyone.
1st Half
Black Hills put together a long and methodical drive to open up the game with QB James Ross going under center. The run game and blocking was in full effect early, especially when getting to the edge of the Hudson’s Bay defense. Taking about five minutes off the clock in the first quarter, the Wolves would cash in with an 18-yard touchdown run from Jesse Keith. After a short kickoff, Hudson’s Bay started with great field position. The legs of QB Xavier Lions gained chunk yardage again and again as they marched down the field. Lions would then find WR Trezhaan Gregory for a 23-yard touchdown to tie the game 7-7.
Those two drives would take up the entire first quarter and Black Hills would have the ball to start the second. They would face a fourth down on the 45-yard line and give the ball to Jaxon Simmons on a sweep. Simmons would break one tackle and nearly go out of bounds but managed to teeter the line and break away for a 65-yard touchdown. After a missed extra point, the Eagles started with great field position once again and put together another nice drive led by Xavier Lions. However, in the red zone, Hudson’s Bay fumbled, and the Wolves recovered.
Just a few plays later, QB James Ross would keep the ball on a designed run and break away for an 82-yard touchdown run to put Black Hills up two scores. The Wolves would force a turnover on downs and get the ball back. The run game continued to dominate, which led to a 2-yard touchdown from Marshal Orona, which put Black Hills in the lead 26-7 going into halftime.
2nd Half
The Eagles once again had a nice drive to start the second half and drove all the way down inside the 10-yard line. Linebacker Jesse Keith, though, made a good read and picked off a pass on fourth down. Penalties would stall the Wolves’ next drive, and they were forced to punt but did take off significant time off the clock. Eagles would again have the ball to start the fourth quarter. Jesse Keith would get his second interception of the day shortly after, though, and give the Wolves the ball back in the red zone. They would hand the ball off to Marshal Orona for a four-yard touchdown and his second of the day.
While Hudson’s Bay was down, they still fought. They put together one of their best drives of the game late in the fourth quarter, which finished with another connection for a touchdown from Xavier Ions to Trezhaan Gregory for 26 yards. Hudson’s Bay would recover on an onside kick right after, but Wolves forced a turnover on downs. Black Hills finished the game with another touchdown from Owen Aslakson and would win 39-14 for their first win of the season.
Chehalis Holiday Inn Express MVP
The Chehalis Holiday Inn MVP of the game went to Jesse Keith, who tallied 58 yards on 6 carries for a touchdown and two interceptions. Not only did he produce on offense, but he was even more effective on defense with the two picks, which led to scores shortly after for his team. A do-it-all player whose presence made a big difference on the field.

Black Hills will face Hockinson at home on Friday, October 2nd with a 7:00 pm kickoff. Hudson’s Bay will face King’s High School on the road on Friday, October 2nd with a 7:00 pm kickoff
