Mossyrock 2, Napavine 1 (25-23, 25-21, 19-25, 25-19)
(Napavine ,WA) The Mossyrock Vikings traveled to Napavine to take on the Tigers as their non-league schedule continues. Even though both are in the Central 2B league this was a non-conference match.
The Vikings came in with a 3-2 record and Napavine was 2-3. League play will begin in a couple of weeks and both squads have a few more non-league matches to prepare for the league schedule in October.
1st Set
In the 1st set the Napavine Tigers led by as many as 5 when Mya Garrett took the serve with a 14-12 lead. Three straight points by Garrett and the Vikings took a time out. The time out worked as it snapped the run of Garrett.
Mossyrock would not give in and tied it at 22-22. Napavine answered to go up by 1 but the following serve went long to tie it again at 23-23.
The Vikings libero, Brooke Schwartz then stepped up with the serve and the Tigers defense returned it but didn’t get a lot on the sho0t and was smothered at the net by the Vikings Maci Rashoff with the block. Mossyrock then took their first lead of the set 24-23 which of course was set point.
Schwartz sent it over and once again Rashoff was there for Mossyrock at the net to block the return shot for a come from behind win to go up 1-0.
2nd Set
In the 2nd set neither side would allow the other to make a big run and create distance. With ties at 5-5, 12-12, 19-19 the Tigers would edge ahead 20-19 on a nicely placed soft return from freshman Ellowyn Cserni.
Mossyrock’s defense with a good rally was able to push a return to the side where Ava Ondong was not able to keep it inside the antenna forcing yet another tie at 20-20.
Mossyrock’s senior Anna Zadvodsky then gave the Vikings a little cushion going up 23-20. The Tigers got one back but 23-21 would be as close as they would get.
The Vikings Audrey Ollikainen then fired a kill shot to push the set to set point. Serving was Coco Baldwin and sent it to the backline, the Tigers defense returned but Annika Ball buried her shot for the win and Mossyrock took a 2-0 lead.
3rd Set
Napavine came up with their own run in set 3 when they pushed the lead to 19-13. Serving 18-13, Emily Thuston served deep to the Viking defense who returned but Ondong sent it back to Mossyrock where Calliope Schultz returned the shot setting up a deep return from Makayla Brett and the Vikings then sent it long and out.
Mossyrock would have a bit of a rally but that 6-point deficit ended up too much to recover from and the Tigers forced a 4th set taking it 25-19.
4th Set
The two teams continued their back and forth in the 4th set with Napavine getting a nice run from Ondong to build a 14-11 lead and trying to push the match to a 5th and deciding set. But the Vikings weren’t interested in going more than 4 sets.
Another fab Freshman Brooklyn Smetzler for Mossyrock got the ball rolling firing off 3 straight aces to give the Vikings a 15-14 lead. After the Tigers tied it 15-15, Mossyrock then caught fire scoring 5 straight led by Ollikainen, Schultz and Ball to go up 20-15.
That would be enbough to ice the match as the Vikings finished off the match with a 25-19 4th set win.

The Chehalis Holiday Inn Express MVP award went to Mossyrock’s Calliope Schultz.
What’s Next?
Mossyrock improves to 4-2 on the season and will next travel to Bear Creek on Saturday for another non-league match at 1:30pm. Napavine drops to 2-4 on the year and heads to White Pass on Monday for a 7pm match.
