(Seattle, WA) The Seattle Seahawks opened the season last Wednesday with a tough fought win over the New England Patriots to go 1-0 to begin the 2026 season. The big news from week 1 was the injury to starting QB Sam Darnold that knocked him out of the game after just 5 plays.
Drew Lock came in and was solid throughout the game not turning the ball over one time and handling a position he did not think he would be in on opening night.

Darnold Update
In the press conference after the game last Wednesday, Coach Mike Macdonald was optimistic with the assurance the worst was avoided. In an update on Monday as reported by John Boyle of Seahawks News , coach Macdonald’s optimism was topped with even better news than after the initial exam.
The injury was first thought to be a hip or hip joint issue and neither is the case. It turns out to be a glute, soft tissue, injury. Although no time-line has been determined for Darnold’s return, it is expected to be a short term issue.
Drew Lock is still expected to start this week when Seattle travels to Arizona to face the Cardinals. Seattle will then travel to Washington in week 3, followed by a home game in week 4 with L-A Chargers.
Price and Love Showdown in the Desert
Seahawks rookie running back Jadarian Price was used to coming off the bench when he played at Notre Dame with Jeremiyah Love who led the Irish ground attack. Love was the 1st running back selected in last Spring’s NFL draft by Arizona with the 3rd overall pick. Many draft analysts were a bit surprised when Price was also taken in the 1st round by the Seahawks with the 32nd pick.
In an era that running backs had been devalued by many their value is coming back with teams like Seattle who focus on defense and a ball control offense. Price stood out to the Seahawks who knew they needed to fill the void that Kenneth Walker left when he signed with the Kansas City Chiefs in the off season.
Seahawks News‘ Ari Horton posted a great piece on Price’s reaction to his first NFL game and what it’s going to be like to face his former team mate in just their 2nd Pro game for both of them.
In the story, Price says the competition with Love at Notre Dame made him a much better player and running back. “I’m excited to go against Jeremiyah this upcoming weekend,” Price said.
“I competed. We competed together,” he said. “We said, ‘OK, going into this game, who’s going to have more touchdowns?’ And sometimes we would try to match each other’s touchdowns. It just worked out that way, but it was never like a ‘I hope you don’t do as good’ or something like that. It was never that way because if he didn’t do well, and all of a sudden, I took the starting job, then what good did that make me? I wanted to prove to myself that I’m just as good or better.”
The two will be excited to hopefully share a jersey swap at the end of the game.

Offensive line adds depth
The Seahawks signed guard Evan Beerntsen to their practice squad on Monday, reported by Seahawks News‘ John Boyle.
Beerntsen, a rookie out of Northwestern, fills the open spot the Seahawks had on their practice squad after signing AJ Finley to the 53-man roster ahead of last week’s opener.
A seventh-round pick of the Ravens in this year’s draft, Beerntsen gives the Seahawks added offensive line depth after they lost guard Bryce Cabeldue last week on waivers. Cabeldue was waived Wednesday to make room for Finley on the 53-man roster, and was subsequently claimed by the Raiders.
Beerntsen started his college career at South Dakota State, where he was a three-year starter for the Jackrabbits, earning second-team AP FSC All-American honors in 2024. He then transferred to Northwestern for his final season, starting all 13 games at right guard while earning Honorable Mention All-Big Ten Conference recognition in 2025.
