Toledo 2, Onalaska 1

(Toledo, WA) The Central 2B League Championship would be decided on Wednesday night in Toledo when the Toledo Riverhawks host the Onalaska Loggers for Senior Night and a title showdown. Toledo was in the driver’s seat, needing a draw or a win to win back-to-back league championships. A young Onalaska squad would hope to play spoiler but would need to get a win to take home the league title before both team’s moved on to the District 4 2B Girls Soccer Tournament.

1st Half

Toledo was on the front foot early with their speed paying off and giving Onalaska some early troubles. Those troubles early led to an early goal for the Riverhawks. In the 2nd minute, Kailea Lairson sent a long pass that got by the Onalaska defense and right to Xtyn Norberg on a fastbreak. Norberg showed that speed and fired a shot by Leah Hamilton for a lightning quick strike. A quick 1-0 lead for Toledo put them on the front foot as a draw or win would give them the league title.

Onalaska would struggle to get the ball into the attacking third as the defense of the Loggers was pressure constantly early on. Along with Lairson and Norberg, Aspen Cooper and Onica Chase continued to press the back line of Onalaska. The Logger defense would weather the storm behind Kiley Talley and Mia Olson. Leah Hamilton made some nice saves early but the defense of Toledo was just as strong. Piper Iverson would get a shot off but it was saved by Ivana Cabrera. She didn’t have too much pressure on her as the defense led by Tehya Green was stout as Zaya Norberg, Kora Askin, and Brooklyn Stewart kept all the possession in Toledo’s favor.

While the Riverhawks continued to pressure Onalaska, they couldn’t find any extra breathing room as the rain started to fall late in the first half. Cooper and Norberg continued to use their speed but the physicality of the Loggers prevented too many open shots for Toledo. The Riverhawks would have a shot late in the first half that was knocked away by Hamilton. A miss hit clearance allowed Peyton Holter to fly in and clean up the spillage with a second goal for Toledo in the 35th minute. A dominant first half for Toledo showed on the scoreboard as the Riverhawks led Onalaska 2-0 at halftime.

2nd Half

In the second half needing a win to take the league title, Onalaska started to push more numbers with Kiley Talley playing farther forward for the Loggers. It helped the Ony offense but made them more susceptible to the speedy counters of Toledo. While the Riverhawks had more opportunities, Leah Hamilton was a wall in goal for Onalaska denying some really good opportunities for Toledo to break things open. Toledo would keep the foot on the gas to try to demoralize Onalaska, but the Loggers just kept fighting back with a few opportunities but they couldn’t quite crack the code of the Toledo defense.

With the Riverhawks unable to add on, Onalaska had to find a way to put some pressure on Toledo down the stretch. That would come in the 73rd minute when a goal kick was won by Onalaska. The shot would hit the post but Emilee Rodriguez was there to fire it into the back of the net to get the Loggers on the board. Needing two goals in the final few minutes, it was too little too late for Onalaska. They fought until the end but Toledo’s defense and strong first half would be enough. The Riverhawks heard the final whistle and celebrated a 2-1 win over Onalaska and a second consecutive Central 2B League title.

Chehalis Holiday Inn Express MVP

Our Chehalis Holiday Inn Express MVP of the Match went to Tehya Green for Toledo. The sophomore defender played nearly flawless on the backline, leading the communication for the Riverhawk defense that was harder to get past than Fort Knox security. She was in the right place at the right time consistently and kept on pressuring the ball into the Toledo attacking third to keep the pressure on the Loggers back line.

What’s Next

Both Toledo and Onalaska are now done with the regular season and turn their attention to the District 4 1B/2B Girls Soccer Tournament that begins on Tuesday, November 3rd.
