(Seattle,WA) Coming into this week 7 game against the 5-0 Kansas City Chiefs of course the National media focused on the Chiefs and how much of a steal it was to lure Kenneth Walker III to leave the Super Bowl Champion Seahawks and head to KC.

Seattle also under scrutiny for a 3-3 beginning to the 2026 season and certainly with some sloppy moments. However, the reason they are defending Super Bowl Champions is because of the defense. The same reason they won their first one back in 2013 with the Legion of Boom. The defense led the team then and “The Dark Side” led the Hawks to a Championship last season and will be the reason if they repeat as Champions.
The Dark Side is becoming more lethal every week as they have cut down on their own mistakes and laser focused and you will need to bring your best to scratch out a few points.
The Dark Side overshadow’s the 1st Half
After a half of play the Kansas City offense was held to just five first downs 96 total yards. Mahomes was 8 of 15 for 68 yards passing and an interception. Walker was held to just 28 yards rushing. Seattle countered with 14 first downs, 251 total yards, and 39 plays. Darnold completed 13 of 18 for 178 yards and an interception. The three-man running back attack led by Emmanuel Wilson had racked up 73 yards in the first half.
Seattle’s defense was overwhelming in the first half, not allowing the Kansas City Chiefs to even reach the red zone, let alone threaten to score from it.
Seattle’s offense was very efficient in tonight’s game. They only had seven possessions for the entire game and scored on their second chance in the first half. The big play of that drive came when Sam Darnold found Jackson Smith-Njigba on a 33-yard pass completion from the 47 down to the 14-yard line, putting Seattle in great scoring position.
The drive would stall on the Kansas City 7-yard line. Jason Myers came on for a 25-yard chip-shot field goal and put it through the uprights and Seattle took the 3-0 lead with 8:22 left to go in the first quarter.
The Chiefs’ following drive ended up in an interception when Nick Emmanwari put pressure on Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes fired the ball down the field to the left side and Ty Okada stepped in front of it for the Seahawks’ interception, giving the ball back to the Seahawks in good field position.
The Seahawks didn’t waste that opportunity as they then went on a 10-play drive and capped it off with a beautiful 28-yard touchdown strike from Darnold to Smith-Njigba. Smith-Njigba caught it just inside the 2-yard line, was able to step on the goal line, extend the boundary, and get in for the touchdown. The extra point was good and Seattle took a 10-0 lead.
After a three-and-out the Seahawks were driving again and a pair of big pass completions from Darnold to Smith and Njigba again set them up deep in Kansas City territory. Then the one negative of the night: on second and goal from the 3-yard line, Darnold dropped back to pass and tried to zip one over the middle to Rashid Shaheed. He and Smith-Njigba collided and it was picked off.
With little time left to go in the first half, the Chiefs did get into field goal position but Harrison Butker came up short on a 50-yard attempt. They would go to the half with Seattle leading it 10-0.
2nd Half got Darker and Offense Dominated
One of the things the Seattle Seahawks have wanted to do was to slow the game down, sustain drives, and get the opposing offense off the field as quickly as possible. They did just that, overwhelmingly slowing the game down. Seattle only had seven possessions in the entire game, Kansas City with just eight.
Seattle’s first drive of the second half was a 13-play, 57-yard drive that ended up in a 35-yard field goal from Myers. The drive took nearly 7 minutes off the clock and Seattle led 13-0.
Kansas City’s first possession of the second half was their best of the game. It was a long drawn-out drive but ultimately ended up with a 50-yard field goal attempt from Butker, which he made to put Kansas City on the board, trailing 13-3. However the 13-play drive took more than 6 minutes and left just 1:42 left to go in the third quarter.
After the only three-and-out drive of the night for Seattle, Kansas City did get the ball back. Again another good drive, 11 plays, but once again it stalled and they were forced to try a field goal. This time a 45-yarder for Butker but he was wide to the right, no good. A double whammy for the Chiefs: they could not push it to a one-score game and they also bled more than 6 minutes off the clock.
With just 4:46 left to go in the game, Seattle once again put on a long sustained drive, picking up first downs and being exceptionally efficient on third down on this night as well. Seattle was 11 of 16 on third-down conversions in this ball game. The frustrated Kansas City defense just could not get the Seattle offense off the field.
The Hawks had driven down to the Chiefs’ 21-yard line and on a third-and-four there was the handoff to Emmanuel Wilson. He busted it over the left side, found a hole, and went into the end zone for the touchdown. With the extra point Seattle took a commanding 20-3 lead leaving just 3:42 to go in the ballgame and Kansas City burning two of the timeouts, trying to save some time, hoping they’d get the ball back without the Seahawks adding any more scores.
The win pushed Seattle’s record to 4-3 on the season. They now trail San Francisco by 2 games in the NFC West. The 49ers suffered their first loss of the season at Atlanta to drop to 6-1. The LA Rams beat the Raiders today so they improved. They’re still a game behind Seattle in third place at 3-4 and Arizona is in the basement at 2-5.
Kansas City suffered their first loss of the year and dropped to 5-1, or a half game in front of Denver, who won today. They’re now 5-2, followed by the Las Vegas Raiders and the Los Angeles Chargers.
The Seahawks won’t have time to rest on their laurels though. They’ve got another big one next week. They’ll play next Monday night at home again on Monday Night Football. The Chicago Bears come to town.
Kansas City will look to rebound. It will be a tough one: a road trip to the Mile High City, where they’ll take on Denver in a battle for first place in the AFC West. Kickoff time for that game is 1:25 Sunday afternoon.
