Camas Papermakers 41, Curtis Vikings 14
(University Place, WA) With both teams making state last year, there were a lot of expectations coming into this game. Camas has been to the state championship in the last two years and has cultivated a powerhouse football program that continues to impress. Curtis, on the other hand, has made waves over the past few seasons and is still young and hungry while competing in maybe the toughest league in all of Washington. Camas came into the game 0-1 after a tough loss to Chiawana 28-7. Curtis, on the other hand, came into the game 1-0 after a dominant win over Silas 34-14.
1st Half
Curtis would get the ball to start the game and put together a nice drive with Sam Patterson and Taylor Smith connecting for multiple big gains. Tyce Kinley also got going on the ground and the Vikings would up on the 3 yard line. A mishandling of the snap would cause a fumble though in which Camas would recover. The high tempo offense of Camas would get going early with the help of Thor Brody on the ground and Benjamin Druckman through the air. Druckman would connect with Blake Schafer in stride for 50 yards to put the Papermakers in striking range. They would cash in on a ten yard touchdown catch from Zachary Jones for the first score of the game.
Curtis would get the ball back but not for long, as just a few plays into the drive, Luke Parbon would make a great play over the middle and come up with an interception for the second forced turnover of the game for Camas. They would capitalize one more on a nine-yard diving touchdown catch from Brody Parker in the back of the end zone to take the two-score lead. With the ball once again, Curtis running back Tyce Kinley would put together a few nice runs to set them up in the red zone. From 20 yards out, Patterson would find Charles Torrone over the middle after breaking a couple tackles, found his way into the end zone.
Camas responded well, though, once again as Thor Brody started to unleash in the run game. After a 49-yard catch-and-run from Adrian Arnold, Brody found his way into the end zone untouched for his first touchdown of the game. Caamas would get another stop on fourth down and once again let Brody go to work. He finished the drive with a 13-yard touchdown for number two on the night. With limited time left in the first half, Curtis needed momentum going into halftime. They put together a great two-minute drill led by Sam Patterson and his receiving core. Once again while in the red zone, Patterson found Cole Yanos for the seven-yard touchdown to make it a two-score game going into halftime, 28-14
2nd Half
Camas would pick up right where they left off in the first drive of the second half. Druckman continued to make plays through the air while Brody kept it going on the ground. The mix of the two became too much to handle for the Curtis defense. Kian Krueger would run for a 22-yard gain before securing a three-yard touchdown to end the drive. The Camas defense would force another fumble and take back over, this time ending with another touchdown from Thor Brody from 13 yards out and his third of the night. After that, both teams exchanged punts until midway through the fourth quarter, when Camas ran the clock down to the very end and secured the win.
Sumner Holiday Inn MVP of the Game
The Sumner Holiday Inn MVP of the game went to Thor Brody, who tallied 154 yards on 23 carries and three touchdowns. He was a workhorse the entire night and outscored Curtis by himself. One of, if not the biggest parts of their offense, and he goes home with a hat trick as a reward. An outstanding game from Brody, and he will be a player that teams need to be aware of moving forward.
What’s Next?
Curtis will face Lakes High School at home on Friday, September 18th with a 7:oo pm kickoff. Camas will face Skyview High School on the road on Friday, September 18th with an 8:00 pm kickoff. This kicks off league play for Camas, and Curtis’ league play will start on September 25th against Puyallup High School
